Hobbiton Movie Set

Visitor Guide

The Hobbiton Movie Set exists because Peter Jackson wanted a real location, and because a farm in Matamata, New Zealand happened to have a hillside that looked exactly like the Shire when viewed from a specific angle at a specific time of day. The Alexander family's sheep farm was initially used for The Lord of the Rings trilogy in 1999, the site was rebuilt and upgraded in permanent materials for The Hobbit trilogy between 2011 and 2012, and since 2012 it has operated as a year-round tourist attraction with the full cooperation of Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate. The Hobbit holes are not reproductions of something that once existed on a film set — they are, in most cases, rebuilt on exactly the same foundations as the originals, with refinements that make them more photogenic and durable than their film counterparts.

For fans of Tolkien's work and Jackson's adaptation, the site delivers on its premise in ways that are genuinely surprising. The landscape is unmodified — the rolling green hills, the party tree (now a permanent artificial structure that keeps its leaves year-round), and the views across the Waikato farmland look precisely as they do in the films, because this is literally the same geography. Walking the path from the main gate through the Hobbit hole rows toward the bridge and the Green Dragon Inn produces the specific feeling of entering a location you've seen in your imagination for decades. The detail of the props — gardens with actual growing vegetables, hung washing on lines, barrels, tools, and set dressing maintained by a permanent crew — creates the impression of a populated village whose residents have temporarily stepped out.

Tours run throughout the day and are mandatory — you cannot explore the site independently, which is a deliberate choice that maintains the set's condition. Tour groups of up to 20 people move through the village with a guide who explains the filming history of specific locations, points out details that don't translate to screen, and makes stops for photography at the most important sites. The tour ends at the Green Dragon Inn, where included beverages (the Sackville-Baggins Cider and the Green Dragon Ale are produced specifically for the site) allow you to sit inside a Hobbit pub that is indistinguishable from its on-screen appearance. The gift shop sells licensed merchandise and locally produced goods, some exclusive to the site.

Tickets sell out, and advance booking is not optional for any period with moderate tourism traffic — which is effectively all of them. The Hobbiton website sells tickets months in advance, and special evening banquet tours (which include a full meal in the Green Dragon) book out fastest. Transportation from Auckland (about 2.5 hours) or Rotorua (about 45 minutes) is available through the site's shuttle services or via self-drive; GPS navigation handles the farm driveway accurately. The site is not directly accessible by public transit, making the shuttle service or rental car the practical options for international visitors.

Matamata as a town is pleasant but compact — the main visitor infrastructure is oriented around Hobbiton tourism, with cafés, accommodation options, and a small information center in the town center. Combining Hobbiton with Waitomo Glowworm Caves (about 80 minutes west) or the Waikato region's thermal attractions creates a reasonable multi-day New Zealand itinerary that prioritizes the North Island's most distinctive natural and pop culture landmarks. For visitors planning a comprehensive Lord of the Rings New Zealand pilgrimage, Hobbiton, Weta Workshop in Wellington, and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (Mount Doom's filming location) form the essential trilogy of sites.
